Triumph Stag Restoration Project

    The Triumph Stag

Triumph Stag - The Grand Touring Icon

The Triumph Stag is one of Britain’s most distinctive and charismatic classic cars — a stylish 2+2 grand tourer designed by Giovanni Michelotti and produced by Triumph (British Leyland) between 1970 and 1977. Conceived as a luxury open-top cruiser to rival Mercedes and BMW of the era, the Stag combined elegant Italian design with a uniquely British V8 soundtrack.

Powered by Triumph’s own 3.0-litre OHC V8 engine, the Stag delivers smooth, effortless performance and a refined driving experience that remains engaging today. Available with manual or automatic transmission, power steering and independent suspension, it offered grand-touring comfort in a convertible form — a rare combination in the 1970s.

Around 25,900 examples were built, with approximately 8,000 surviving in the UK, making the Stag both collectible and usable. Supported by excellent club networks and specialist parts suppliers, ownership today is far easier than in decades past.

Despite early reputations for overheating and reliability issues, most modern Stags have long since been restored or upgraded to eliminate those weaknesses. With proper maintenance, the Triumph Stag is now regarded as a reliable, rewarding, and appreciating British classic.

At British & Classic, we service, restore and preserve Triumph Stags to the highest standards — from preventative maintenance and mechanical rebuilds to concours-level restorations. Each Stag represents a piece of British motoring heritage, combining elegance, performance and unmistakable character.
